3D Printer Policy

Policy Statement:
Library 3D printers are used for recreational, educational, training, and programming purposes.
Conditions:
When available, the library’s 3D printers may be used by the public subject to the following conditions:
- The library reserves the right to limit public use of 3D printers based on available staffing, library use, equipment maintenance or failure, library operating hours or building closure.
- Before using a 3D printer at any of the library branches a patron must complete all orientation and training provided by the library.
- Use of a 3D printer is limited to Scottsdale Public Library cardholders who are 12 years of age or older. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian in order to be in a makerspace or use a 3D printer.
- A liability waiver must be signed by each patron using the 3D printer. A parent or guardian signature is required on a separate waiver for children under the age of 12.
- The library’s Rules of Conduct must be followed at all times.
- Patrons operating a 3D printer are responsible for maintaining the makerspace area, all tools and supplies used and 3D printer equipment and parts. All items used must be left in good, working order.
- Patrons using a 3D printer are responsible for any repair or replacement costs incurred due to negligent or intentional damage or loss that occurs to equipment, tools or supplies.
- No 3D printer parts, tools or supplies are allowed to leave the library or makerspace area. Theft of library property will be reported to Scottsdale Police Department.
- Patrons are prohibited from using a 3D printer to manufacture, develop, or create any object that could be deemed a weapon or part of a weapon (defined as an object capable of being used to inflict great bodily injury or death).
- The library’s 3D printers may be used only for lawful purposes. Patrons are not permitted to use 3D printers to create material that is:
- Prohibited by local, state or federal law.
- Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others or that is otherwise inappropriate for a library environment.
- In violation of another’s intellectual property rights.
- It is the responsibility of patrons to remove or delete any personal files from library equipment.
- The library is not responsible for equipment or files left behind. After 14 days unclaimed 3D printed items will become property of the library and may be disposed of under the libraries policy for lost items.
- The library is not responsible for the loss of data or information nor for liability that occurs as a result of the use of its 3D printers.
- The library does not guarantee 3D printing results or the performance of 3D printers.
- The library reserves the right to refuse any request to use the 3D printers or supply 3D printing services.
- 3D printers may not run before or after library hours, or be used outside of makerspace hours.
- Fees for materials (e.g., filament) depend on project size and requirements. Fees may vary under the purview of the Library Director, subject to council approval.
President's Day Closure
All Scottsdale Library locations, including Pony Express at Appaloosa, will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16, for the Presidents Day holiday.
