Library Mission Statement
The Scottsdale Public Library provides a supportive environment for the community to discover opportunities, explore ideas, interact with others, and become lifelong learners.

  • 1955 Lou Ann Noel and Beth Fielder started "loaning out" 300 donated books in a small room in the Adobe House.
  • 1959 The Friends of the Scottsdale Library was established.
  • 1960 The Town of Scottsdale assumed responsibility for the library and the first professional librarian was hired.
  • 1968 The new main library opened for business. The main library was later renamed the Civic Center Library.
  • 1987 Opening of the Mustang Library, Scotttsdale's first branch and, at the time, the largest branch library in Arizona.
  • 1995 A new shared-use facility, Palomino Library, debuted.  It is located on the campus of Desert Mountain High School and serves the public as well as the school students and staff.
  • 1996 Scottsdale opened its second shared-use facility, the Arabian Library, on the campus of Desert Canyon Elementary and Middle Schools.
  • 2007 The new Arabian is open and ready for business. In addition to a new building, Arabian has new hours-it's open 10-6 on Saturdays. Stop by for a tour.

The new Arabian features a cafe.

Please visit any of our four libraries to shop in the Book Corral, which has great prices on gently used books, magazines, and media. Volunteers at all four libraries sort and price donated items and operate the Book Corral. In addition to used materials, all four Book Corrals sell fun and affordable gifts.

Volunteer @ Your Library
Volunteers are an essential part of our daily operations. If you are interested in volunteering your time and talents, we would love to hear from you. Volunteer applications are available at each of our libraries. You may also view current opportunities for adults and teens.

Join the Friends!
The Friends of the Scottsdale Public Library, founded in the 1950s and re-energized in the 1980s, is a nonprofit, all-volunteer community organization whose 500-plus members support Scottsdale’s public library system through a variety of awareness-building and fund-raising activities. Money raised by the Friends funds a variety of public programs at the four Scottsdale libraries, focusing on youth. Friends-funded programs are much needed, but not covered in current, or future, City of Scottsdale library budgets.

Donation of Materials
Bring us your used books, magazines, videos, tapes, CDs, books on tape, and DVDs. Your donations help us grow! When a donation is not added to the library's collection, it may be sent to the Book Corral, the library's gift and used book sale area.  (Donation Guidelines)

Gift Announcments and Memorials
Celebrate a birthdays or simply say thank you. Gift announcements are availabe for any amount of $25 or more. We will mark the gift with a bookplate naming your special honoree, and you receive a parchment Gift Announcement to let them know that a book has been purchased in their honor.  A memorial gift enriches the lives of those who use the library and is a lasting and thoughtful way to honor a loved one. Gifts of money or resources may be dedicated to the memory of a special person. You may use our online form for your gift announcement or memorial donation.
