Tips for Starting Your Own Book Club

Who: Who are members you will ask to join your club? Good candidates are friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members. Do you want to open up your book club to anyone or just people you know? Book clubs are a great way to get to know people in your community. They're also a fabulous way to schedule time to see your busy friends or to make new ones! Do you want to pick a theme for your club like a Mother and Daughters group or a Singles book club? How many people do you want to invite to join? Keep in mind that not everyone will be able to make all the meetings.

What: What kind of books do you want to read? Do you want to pick a genre such as nonfiction, romance, historical fiction, mystery or best sellers? Do you want the group to decide together what to read or perhaps just take turns and have everyone select a book?

When: When do you want to meet? Many book groups meet once a month. However, if it is more convenient to meet every other month, do it! What time of day will work best for your members?

Where: Where are you going to meet? There is no right or wrong place. Some groups take turns meeting at member's houses; others meet in public places like restaurants, coffee shops or libraries. If you are planning to meet in a public place make sure to clear your plans with the facility or ask if you need to schedule a room.
